What Does Under ₹5,000 Actually Get You?

Let's be honest: under ₹5,000 is a no-frills zone. You get a basic inkjet printer — no WiFi, no scanner, no duplex printing. What you do get is a machine that prints A4 documents, handles occasional colour printing, and does the job when you need a hard copy.

The HP DeskJet 2331 fits this description perfectly. It connects via USB, prints at up to 7.5 pages per minute (mono) and 5.5 ppm (colour), and accepts standard HP 802 ink cartridges. Setup takes under 10 minutes. There's nothing complicated here — plug in, install the driver, print.

The Canon PIXMA iP2870 is another solid option at roughly the same price. It's a pure photo-friendly printer — Canon's colour science is excellent even at this price point — but it's inkjet-only, USB-only, and the cartridge costs add up faster than you'd expect.

The Ink Cost Reality at This Budget

This is the part sellers don't advertise loudly: cartridge printers at this price level are expensive to run.

The HP DeskJet 2331 uses HP 802 cartridges:

  • Black (HP 802 Black): roughly ₹250 for ~200 pages → ₹1.25 per page
  • Colour (HP 802 Colour): roughly ₹400 for ~100 pages → ₹4 per page

Print 500 pages a month? You'll spend ₹600–₹700 in ink alone. Over a year, that's more than what you paid for the printer.

The Canon PIXMA iP2870 uses PG-745 and CL-746 cartridges with similar economics. There's no escape from cartridge costs at this price tier.

The honest advice: If you print more than 100 pages a month, spend ₹7,999 on the Canon PIXMA G2020 instead. The ink tank system saves thousands in running costs. Under ₹5,000 makes sense only if you print rarely — a few dozen pages a month at most.

Who Should Buy a Printer Under ₹5,000?

Buy it if:

  • You print occasionally — a few documents a week, nothing regular
  • You're a student printing assignments once in a while
  • You need a printer for a specific short-term need (exam season, office work from home for a month)
  • You already have a printer at work and need a backup at home

Don't buy it if:

  • You print more than 100 pages a month (cartridge costs will eat you alive)
  • You need WiFi printing from your phone
  • You need to scan or copy documents
  • You want to print photos regularly

Should You Stretch the Budget to the HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2776?

At around ₹4,999, the HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2776 adds WiFi, a scanner, and a copier. If your budget allows, this is worth stretching for — it's genuinely an all-in-one at almost no extra cost over the basic DeskJet 2331.

The WiFi alone changes everything. You can print from your phone, your parents' phones, and any laptop in the house without plugging anything in. The scanner means you can digitise documents directly. For an extra ₹1,900 over the DeskJet 2331, you're getting a significantly more capable machine.

That said, the ink cost problem doesn't go away with the 2776 — it still uses HP 803 cartridges, which are similarly expensive to run.

Verdict

HP DeskJet 2331 is the best printer under ₹5,000 in India for 2026 — simple, reliable, cheap to buy. Just go in with clear eyes about the ink costs, and only buy one if your monthly print volume is low.

If you want WiFi and scanning without blowing the budget, squeeze to the HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2776 at ₹4,999. And if you print more than you thought — upgrade to the Canon PIXMA G2020 at ₹7,999 and thank yourself in six months.
